We live in Philadelphia?!!

It’s true! Last Sunday morning we woke up in Colorado (on vacation with my family), and drove back to Iowa (13+ hours).  Monday morning, we woke up in Iowa and got organized, got travel snacks and drove east.  We made it as far as Pittsburgh (11 and a half -ish hours) (and A LOT OF TOLLS!).  Tuesday morning, we woke up in Pennsylvania and drove 6 more hours and MADE IT TO PHILADELPHIA!

That is a lot of time spent in the car.  But we love road trips, so it all went by pretty fast.  Except driving through Nebraska, of course.  The wonderful part of this drive to a new assignment was getting to travel together!! We took 2 cars to Texas and to Wisconsin, but this time around we knew we would be living downtown and would only need 1.  So after the challenge of consolidating all of stuff to fit in one car, we were travel buddies once again.

And we couldn’t leave without our other favorite travel buddy.

Our joy and enthusiasm arriving in Philadelphia was quickly replaced by mild frustration trying to figure out where to park to unload the car. (“how do people move in big cities??”) and fatigue bringing all our stuff up to our apartment on the 15th floor — don’t get me wrong, we had a cart and there was an elevator BUT it was really hot out and we had to take multiple trips up and down (“what IS all this stuff we brought??) and the shock and comedy of seeing our apartment for the first time.  We call it our dorm room.  It’s cozy (read small). Pictures to come, when its all organized and unpacked. Promise.

So Wednesday I started work- lots of nice people, laid back, I think it will be a fun 13 weeks! Friday, I was done by 1- woohoo!!!!  After a nap, I talked Joe into a run and we ended up on the steps of the Art Museum, though you may know them better as the Rocky steps.  We ran up them victoriously! And then promptly dove into a fountain as that it was 96 degrees.  Again no pictures.  But there will be! Next time we are there, with a camera.  Maybe this weekend?

Okay, Saturday… exploration day!! First on our agenda was to hit up the Reading Terminal Market and find ourselves a DiNic’s roast pork sandwich.

Joe had scoped this out on a Man vs. Food episode, not during the food challenge part, but during the part where Adam introduces other foods from the city he is visiting.  We may or may not be using these episodes to make decisions about where to take assignments.

We were not disappointed.  Not at all all.  Not even a little.  That sandwich was well worth the half hour wait in line.

Next up, Liberty Bell!

We got kicked out after Joe touched it.  Apparently you aren’t supposed to do that?

Oh, and we saw George while we were there.

We also checked out a few other historical places.

Independence Hall.

By this time, we were pretty worn out.  We still have tons more to see, but WE LIVE HERE! So we can keep on exploring.  We treked back to our apartment, got updates on the Bix (I was bummed to be missing it for the third year in a row), and napped.

Sunday, we met up with some of Joe’s book kids at a Civil War fort in Delaware.  It was fun to be so close and get to see everyone at their Sunday meeting.  We made it back into the city, parked our car in the garage, and walked to church.  I love the old churches tucked into the tall city buildings.

So that was our first almost week in Philly.  So far, so fun!  Big city living is so different than what we are used to, but we are always up for an adventure!

Happy August!!
